Reading Inventory and Book Recommendations

Goals:  District reading inventory assessment. Agenda:  Reading inventory assessment Book Recommendation Slide Catch-up time Today we take a reading inventory assessment.  It probably won't take you the whole period (it's a block day after all), so you will have some time to catch up on other work when you finish. It will give us valuable data about how you read. This test can qualify you for some bonus points if you exceed your previous score. (More about that in class.) START HERE (If you are absent don't try to take this test at home.) Book Recommendation Slide: What's your favorite book that you read this year ?  You are going to make a recommendation page for that book.  Your page will be a slide.  Go to Google Classroom and look for a new assignment there. Use the slide number that matches your assigned computer number. (Don't edit other sides. I can see who did what in the revision history.) I'll even give you a grade for it. Goals: Write a book review that includes some complex sentence structures, review our survey data further, and preview our final project. Note: Block schedule Monday-Thursday this week. Agenda: Read Grammar lesson Review of Book #11 Review of our data Preview of our next project Grammar lesson / Review of Book #11:  One of the things that makes plagiarism so easy to spot, is that adult writers use more complex sentence structure than 9th grade students do.  Today you'll use some mentor sentences to make your review of book #11 sound older and more mature.  1. Include a compound sentence with a "who" phrase. Separate your "who" phrase with commas. Example: Harry Potter, who was a wizard, attended Hogwarts, and later worked for The Ministry of Magic.  2. They are giving you feedback, anonymously. (But I still get to see who said what. It's not anonymous for the teacher.) Revise writing: Review your feedback and spend some time improving your essay. Goal:  Charting the text about academic honesty Agenda: Read Charting the text Charting the text: You will need the article "Cheating on the Rise Among High School Students" that I assigned to you in Google Classroom on Wednesday. With your table, work to complete the chart about what the author is  saying  and  doing . You will create this chart in your English Journal. Be sure you put a date on it.  It should look like the picture on the right when you start.  Insert/table 3x4 (3 across, 4 down). You should be able to get this done in class, but finish for HW if you need to.  Reminders:  Take a deep breath. Read a good book. Clean your room. (I take book donations.) Make some progress on something that will help you.

Goals:  Article of the week and catch up time. Agenda: Read AOW Catch Up Time Independent reading:  Read (10 minutes) Article of the Week: Newsela Articles: There are three new articles assigned to you in Newsela. One is about the volcano in Hawaii, another is about events in Korea, and the third is about students using digital devices for cheating.  Read at least TWO of them and take the quiz in Newsela.  Sign in with your district Google account. You may need to go to "Binder" to find your assigned articles. Read two of the assigned articles.  Click "open activities" then click on the lightbulb to take the quizzes.  Write about ONE of of the articles in your English Journal. Kind of obvious. Goals: First read of a new article with SOAPSTone and a Precis. Agenda: Read Read a new article SOAPSTone and Precis *Last chance socratic makeup #2* Today at 2:30. If you missed the socratic on 4/27 and the first make up on 5/3 this is your final chance to come and participate. Read a new article:  I shared a new article with you in Google Classroom . Find it and read it. Right clock on words you need to know and choose "define."  Discuss the article at your table. What does it say? What does it mean? Why does it matter?  SOAPSTone and Precis:  After reading the article, work with your partner to complete the soapstone form. Note that the form contains a precis assignment. Do that together. Goal:  Writing groups for your Extreme Sports essays. Agenda: Read Writing Groups Debrief Writing Groups:  Sharing your writing with a group will help you improve your writing and learn what a reader might think while reading your work.  Follow the procedures in the chart or on  THIS PAGE  with your group.  Use the peer review checklist on your essay document.  Reminders:   Read! Finish book #10 or start book #11. Make revisions to your Extreme Sports essay. Final drafts will be due Monday. SOCRATIC MAKE UP is TODAY after school at 2:30. Why would anyone jump out of a  perfectly good airplane?  Goal:  Work on adding evidence to your essay. Focus on correctly quoting, paraphrasing and summarizing the words of others with citations. He found this really isn’t true (3). Paraphrase:  In “Extreme Sports Not About Risk-taking: Study,” Dr. Brymer notes that people who participate in extreme sports try to be prepared so they can decrease their risk of injury (8). Goal:  make progress understanding what you are writing about. Make progress actually writing. Agenda: Read Discuss the quote you are writing about with your group. Work on adding to your draft.  Your complete draft is due before school on Thursday 5/3 for a progress grade.  I suggest you discuss these things with your group: The meaning of the quote.  The extent to which you agree or disagree with what the quote says.  Possible opposing viewpoints to your positions. (What would someone who disagrees with you say?) Possible counter arguments to those opposing viewpoints.  Help each other with possible evidence to support your position.  Self-regulate and decide for yourselves when you need to move from discussion to drafting time.  Reminders: Finish reading book #10.  Friday 5/4 is the end of the grading period.
